We asked Chris to tell us about winning I’m a Scientist, and here is what he said…

Hello current and future scientists!

I feel so proud right now. After I got over the shock on the final Friday, I couldn’t stop repeating ‘I can’t believe I won!’. So, thank you to everyone who asked questions and voted for me, and thank you to our organisers, mods and fellow scientists.

Besides meeting all of you, I feel like I have some new scientist friends. I hadn’t met any of the other scientists in the Biochemistry Zone before this event, but I felt like I got to know them during the past two weeks. The style of this contest really got serious for me on Tuesday when we lost Jess, because I felt like I lost a mate. And then Nikki with her cute E. coli toy, Harriet with her world-changing research and charming smile, and finally Andy, who may be my long-lost brother because we have so much in common.

You all made this a great couple weeks. I’ve never experienced anything like it. I’d leave chats with a big smile from your questions and aching fingers from trying to keep up with the questions. Your questions made me laugh, groan, and think. I had to research quite a few of them. I’d start every morning going through and answering your questions. There’s going to be a sad hole in my mornings now that we’re done.

I was serious about the augmented reality science demos. These will be done by a friend of mine who also works for the University of Manchester and develops apps in his spare time. ModAntony, from the team behind I’m a Scientist, is going to check back with me in about six months. As soon as we are ready to go with our apps, I’m going to ask him to contact you so you can see the results, and then you can let me know what you think.

I hope you had as much fun as I did, both in the frenzied chats and with all the questions. I really love what I do, and I hope that you get the chance to do what you love too.

Chris
