• Question: If there was one thing to change in the world, like global warming or to stop endangering animals etc, what would you try to help prevent? And how?

      Hi Raquel

For me, it’s global warming. I’d like to have systems in place that give us a high quality of life, but don’t burn through the planet.

What a great question Raquel! Really made me think. There is so much that I would like to try to change it’s really hard picking out one. I support charities who help child soldiers and so I think I would pick that. I think it’s so terrible that children get forced to fight wars and are prevented from being able to play and learn and go to school.

If people would have more empathy and learned to understand how their actions affected others, I think that all of these problems would go away, so perhaps that’s the best way to change things?

      Hi!

I think, as a chemist, I could be helpful with global warming and environment protection. There is a branch of chemistry called green chemistry which involves developing reactions and using techniques which would have the least negative impact on the environment. Plus chemists work on the creation of systems for the purification of water and air and for the production of energy.

      Jess.

I would like to change the desire to make loads of money in people. I think this bizarre quest is at the heart of many world issues.

      For example:

Global warming: Instead of investing in sustainable ways of producing energy years ago, we carried on burning oil reserves that will run out and pollute the environment. Its is cheaper. So SOME people make more money.

Endangering animals: the trade for ivory and rhino horns is motivated entirely by making money. Deforestation, which results in the endangerment of loads of animals is the same.

This list is endless…making and selling weapons, wasting food just so we can sell pretty straight carrots i the supermarket…they are all motivated by making money.

I think by telling you that I have helped. Making people aware, making people want to change how things are done and inspiring them to pioneer research into alternative technologies.

There is too much plastic being used and too many cars being made and used!

      Hi

I think that there are loads of issues that we we to work together to try and solve. For me I think that climate change has such huge potential impacts on so many things I would pick that. I would put a lot more money into developing alternative fuels and sources of power, these need to become cheaper if more people are going to switch from fossil fuels.
