In the couple of weeks preceding the period, the uterus creates an internal lining in order to protect egg cells and create a friendly environment for a the development of a possible baby.
During the period the lining gets shredded and expelled, in order to build a new one the following month, this process causes the uterus to spasm and contract causing most of the awful cramps that a lot of women feel.
