        Hi again, Owen:-)

It varied. I was pretty lazy a lot of the time and I was pretty bored. By the time I got to university, I worked like a crazy man, with many all nighters.

Something changed between 14 and 16 for me that made me less of a lazy git.

I worked hard at school, not so much science and maths because I found them quite easy but in English and French, I found them really hard work as I’m dyslexic.

I basically did everything I was meant to and sadly, little more than that. I did make a big effort to male sure I eventually understood things I didn’t understand at the time. I really struggled at maths for ages, right up until my GCSEs and thought I was just no good at it. When I Was told it would be really important for later studying science (it is so useful now!) I really tried my best to get to grips with it. I now realise it was never ‘too hard’ or beyond my understanding it was just that I wasn’t motivated.

The same is so true of languages. I did German and a bit of French. I hated it. I was ‘ok’ at it but never tried hard. I just wasn’t interested and thought it was just really boring and difficult to learn. I now think learning languages is absolutely amazing, and while it is still a challenge, I am so motivated to do it that I really enjoy learning and I naturally, and almost effortlessly put in the work to do so. When its becomes a hobby, it is no longer work…it i like relaxing in your free time.

I have the same story with musical instruments. I am a massive cliche.

It is all about motivation and turning it into a hobby not a task. Find that and you will want to work hard at learning anything, whatever it is. Nothing is inherently ‘too hard’ to learn.

        Hi Owen!

You’re the boss of the ask, it’s nice to see someone so interested!

I was really lucky I had a very good memory and enjoyed learning things, so I didn’t have to work much to get good grades. During secondary school I would do my homework for one hour or two in the evening, unless I had a test the next day, then I would study the whole afternoon.
At university we had lessons from 8.30 a.m. until 6.30 p.m. everyday, so my brain was too tired to study during the term, I was mostly studying during the exams period.
I worked hard and focused when I needed, but I never gave up having fun or relaxing for school, otherwise I would have ended up hating what I was doing.

        Jess.

Hey Owen, thanks for the question. I wasn’t great at school but always did my homework and never bunked off. My school was pretty strict. I would say in the middle… At A – Level I worked harder as I think it began to dawn on me that I really wanted to go to Uni and I needed the grades!!!
