        Great question, thanks.

        We test the drugs in cell culture a lot first. This means seeing if the drugs cause cells in a flask to die. This is quite a long process. Then, if there are some that show good activity in killing bacteria and are not too toxic to mammalian cells in a flask, sadly the next step is to test on animals. We don’t do that here but it is a necessary step in the process. Then, once they have been shown to be safe in animals, they are taken to clinical trials where they are tested on humans.

        We are always working towards alternatives for animal testing.
